Situation
OCT was on-site to conduct a routine online clean of both lines in the gas path.
Initially, the cleaning proceeded as expected, but work was soon halted due to a longstanding blockage within the ash system, specifically in the chute from the draglink conveyor to the ash discharger. The on-site staff tried to clear the blockage using conventional methods, but the ash had solidified due to a combination of moisture and heat within the chute. This resulted in a large unmanageable lump, making it impossible to remove.
Challenge
The blockage posed a significant challenge as it threatened to disrupt the boiler’s operation and potentially lead to a shutdown. Removing the blockage manually would have required shutting down the boiler, removing panels from the chute, and clearing the obstruction, resulting in significant production downtime and revenue loss.
Solution
OCT’s team investigated the problem and devised an effective solution. Using the hopper camera, they pinpointed the exact location of the blockage and identified suitable access points. They then strategically placed small hopper charges to break down and clear the obstruction.
Results
OCT’s timely intervention and innovative solution prevented a potential boiler shutdown and avoided the associated production downtime and revenue loss. The Operations Manager expressed gratitude for OCT’s team’s efforts, stating,
“Just wanted to pass on our gratitude for your teams efforts last Wednesday with helping us with a blockage we had from the main draglink conveyor to the ash discharger.”
He further elaborated,
“It looked like we had a build up of solidified ash we were not aware of until the volume of ash blocked the chute. The team were extremely helpful in assisting us remove the material.”
Conclusion
OCT’s expertise, problem-solving skills, and innovative approach enabled them to effectively clear the ash system blockage, preventing potential disruptions and ensuring the smooth operation of the boiler. By swiftly addressing the blockage, OCT ensured the boiler’s uninterrupted operation, maintaining the facility’s waste processing and energy generation capabilities. The client avoided a potential financial hit in excess of £230,000, which would have resulted from:
- Lost waste throughput
- Reduced power generation capacity
- Costs associated with emergency manual clearing services
